Rapper A$AP Rocky has been charged with assault over a fight in Sweden last month.

Charges were filed against the rapper and two others after Swedish prosecutor Daniel Suneson said he had "come to the conclusion that the events in question constitute a crime despite claims of self-defence and provocation".

The music star has been in custody since 3 July while being investigated over the incident in Stockholm, which happened before an appearance at a music festival.

The case drew more attention when US President Donald Trump intervened, saying he had spoken to Sweden's prime minister and "offered to personally vouch for [A$AP Rocky's] bail".

Mr Trump said he had been prompted to act after he was lobbied by Kanye and Kim Kardashian West.

In a tweet, the president said he had a "very good call" with Stefan Lovfen and was assured the rapper would be "treated fairly".

Celebrities and fellow rappers have called for the star's release and a petition received thousands of signatures.

A$AP Rocky, real name Rakim Mayers, is a platinum-selling and Grammy-nominated artist.

His lawyer says the alleged incident in the Swedish capital was a "self-defence situation".

The star was forced to miss his headline slot at Wireless festival following his detention.

Prosecutors earlier dropped their investigation into a man believed to be involved in the fight with the rapper.
