Police believe the baby found in the Constance Marten and Mark Gordon investigation "may have been dead for some time" and they have been unable to confirm its gender. 

Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford of the Metropolitan Police Service says "at this stage we have not yet been able to confirm the baby's gender and a post-mortem examination has not yet taken place.

"Despite this, based on the inquiries we've carried out so far, we believe, sadly, the baby had been dead for several weeks before they were found. It's too early for us to provide a more specific date." 

He adds that the case has been referred to the police watchdog. 

In a statement released by the Metropolitan Police, the force says it is believe that the baby may have been dead for "several weeks".

Police say Constance Marten and Mark Gordon remain in custody and the warrant for further detention granted on Wednesday lasts until Thursday evening.

Police will provide an update shortly in the ongoing investigation into the death of the baby of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon. 

On Wednesday, police confirmed the remains of a baby had been found in a wooded area near to where the pair were detained in Brighton.

Aristocrat Marten and her boyfriend - a convicted sex offender - were detained on Monday on suspicion of child neglect after a member of the public spotted them at a shop. 

They were further arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter on Tuesday after police said they had refused to say where the baby was.

Analyst Graham Wettone, who was a police officer for 30 years, told Sky News how he expects the investigation will go forward.

A specialist crime commander from the Met will lead the investigation, supported by Sussex Police, he said, and a crime scene will be in place where the body was found.

"That will probably stay where they found it for now while they clear the crime scene," said the analyst.

This includes forensic examination and the removal of anything considered to be potential evidence, he said.

A post-mortem will then be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Police will continue to appeal for any information on Constance Marten and Mark Gordon's whereabouts over the last two months.

This will include where they have slept or eaten, shops they have been to, and bus and taxi rides they have taken, which police will use to establish a timeline.

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon will face more questions in the coming days after a magistrate granted police permission to hold them in custody for a further 36 hours.

Ms Marten, 35, and Mr Gordon, 48, were reported missing after their car broke down near junction four of the M61, near Bolton, on Thursday 5 January.

Over the following days, there were sightings of them in a number of places, including Liverpool, Essex, south London and East Sussex.

Authorities believed the couple had been sleeping rough in a blue tent, and had avoided being traced by the police by moving around frequently and keeping their faces covered in CCTV images.

The pair were spotted in Brighton by a member of the public just before 9.30pm on Monday.

They were arrested on suspicion of child neglect, before being arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

Ms Marten, who is from a wealthy family, has lived an isolated life with Mr Gordon since they met in 2016.

Police have warned media and the public not to speculate on the remains of a baby found in woodland by police officers.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford said it was "imperative" people refrain from making comments online that could be prejudicial to any potential court proceedings.

He said that anyone with information should contact police.

Following the news that a baby's remains have been found, police commentator Graham Wettone has given an insight into what officers will be prioritising now.

He told Sky News a crime scene will be in place where the body was found and will stay in place for some time. 

Officers will now be working to "piece together exactly what happened" and "establish a timeline" of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon's movements, Wettone said. 

The couple had been missing for around seven weeks. 

"It is my very sad duty to update this afternoon that police officers searching a wooded area close to where Constance [Marten] and Mark Gordon were arrested discovered the remains of a baby," says Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course, a crime scene is in place and work is expected to continue "for some time", he adds.

"I recognise the impact this news will have on many people who have been following this story closely," says the detective superintendent, adding police will do everything they can to establish what has happened.

"I would first and foremost like to extend my heartfelt condolences on behalf of Sussex police to the wider family of the baby at this time," says Chief Superintendent James Collis.

"I understand that the conclusion of this search will be heartbreaking for the local community and the wider public."

He thanks the public for volunteering information and assistance with searches.

"We continue to support the Metropolitan Police as they conduct their investigation and also the wider community as we all come to terms with this tragedy," he says.

Brighton Magistrates court has extended custody of Constance Marten and Mark Gordon for questioning for a further 36 hours, police say.
