Banksy beats Turner in UK's favourite artworks

The graffiti artist's mural surpasses paintings by British greats like John Constable and JMW Turner.

Banksy's famous stencil of a girl losing a heart-shaped balloon has been chosen as Britain's favourite artwork.

The graffiti mural, titled Balloon Girl, first appeared on the side of a shop in Shoreditch, east London, in 2002.

The poll, carried out by Samsung to mark the launch of its new TV The Frame, gathered the votes of 2,000 people who selected their favourite from a short list made by arts editors and writers.

Banksy's Balloon Girl was followed by John Constable's The Hay Wain and Jack Vetriano's The Singing Butler.

JMW Turner's The Fighting Temeraire features at number four, while The Beatles' Sgt Pepper cover and Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon come at number eight and nine respectively.

Banksy's mural was first sold in a cardboard version by Sotheby's for £73,250 in 2012.

In 2014 the original stencil mural was removed from the wall of the shop to be exhibited and was then sold for around £500,000.

It is one of the most iconic paintings in pop culture today - with pop star Justin Bieber even tattooing it on his forearm.
