They then chatted to Tom Jones, from Rickmansworth, who attends RVS Rickmansworth lunch club and also cares for his wife, who has dementia.

The Johnson family's video call comes after the UK recorded 122,186 new cases of COVID and a further 137 deaths on Christmas Eve.

In his Christmas message to the nation, which was released on the same day, the prime minister encouraged people to get a booster jab.

He said: "Though the time for buying presents is theoretically running out, there is still a wonderful thing you can give your family and the whole country, and that is to get that jab, whether it is your first or second, or your booster.
