Boy, 17, arrested after bus driver stabbed in back and leg

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was stabbed in Sheffield city centre in the middle of the afternoon.

The victim, 40, was stabbed in the back and in the leg in what police believe was an attempted robbery.

He is in hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition, South Yorkshire Police said.

Local media reports said the victim is a bus driver.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Henderson thanked members of the public who held the boy until police arrived.

He said: "Their brave actions meant that we were able to take control of the situation quickly, get the offender into custody and the victim to hospital. I'd like to thank everyone who assisted.

"At this time, we believe this was an attempted robbery which has escalated and officers are in the area carrying out enquiries to ascertain exactly what happened."

According to the Sheffield Star, bus company First also thanked members of the public.

A spokesman was quoted as saying: "They helped the driver, jumped on the attacker and held him down."
