Boris Johnson's Brexit deal has been backed by MPs at Westminster paving the way for the UK to leave the EU by the 31 January deadline.

The prime minister's updated European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill was given a second reading - its first parliamentary stage - by 359 votes to 234, a Commons majority of 125.

The division list showed that six Labour MPs rebelled to support it.

This is how the votes stacked up:

It was the first chance for MPs to vote on the legislation since the general election, which saw Mr Johnson returned to power with a landslide.

The bill will be subjected to further scrutiny by both Houses of Parliament in the new year before receiving royal assent, delivering on the Tory leader's pledge to depart the Brussels bloc by the end of January.
