Raye on the fight to release debut album My 21st Century Blues: 'It's been a real wild journey'

In 2021, Raye parted ways with her label after claiming on social media that she had been held back from releasing an album. Now, she is a record-breaking Brits winner with a number one single and MOBO and Ivor Novello awards under her belt.

Here is our interview with the star from January 2023, in which she spoke candidly about the fight to make music on her own terms.

Kylie Minogue officially recognised as 'global icon' and closes Brits in style

We knew it was coming - but it was absolutely worth the wait.

Now-global icon Kylie is finally honoured with the title she deserves - presented to her by pop award winner Dua Lipa.

"One of the greatest pop legends the world has ever seen," she is dubbed in a video played before her walk.

The Australian takes to the stage amid what is undoubtedly the loudest cheer of the night.

She immediately congratulates Raye, adding that she'll be sobbing with her in the crowd shortly.

"There's a part of that's still the 14-year-old girl in her room dreaming about making music," she says.

"Anything is possible."

And she now takes to the stage...

She starts her medley with 2023 smash-hit 'Padam Padam' and includes 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' and 'Slow', complete with several on-stage outfit changes.

What a way to finish the show.

Raye wins best album

Who else?

My 21st Century Blues is the best album of the year say the Brit Awards - and you'd have a job arguing against that.

Raye's in tears, and brings her grandmother on stage who - understandably - is in floods herself.

What a night for Raye.

"You just don't understand what this means to me," she manages to squeeze out in between sobs.

"I'm ugly crying on national television," she adds.

"I'm so proud of this album, I'm in love with music," she concludes.

A reminder that she's already made Brits history this evening - now the winner of the most awards in a single year with six.

Breathtaking stuff at the O2.

Next - album of the year

This is the big one, the top five albums of 2024 as shortlisted by Brits voters - but there can only be one winner.

Here are the nominees:

  • Blur - The Ballad Of Darren
  • J Hus - Beautiful And Brutal Yard
  • Little Simz - No Thank You
  • Raye - My 21st Century Blues
  • Young Fathers - Heavy Heavy
'Calm Down' gets O2 on its feet

Rema may have missed out on international song of the year, but that doesn't stop him raising the roof with a rendition of 'Calm Down'.

The Nigerian Afrobeat artist appears amid an incredible set and several backing dancers and has the vast majority of those inside the O2 on their feet.

It really is a great song, that.

Miley Cyrus wins best international song

Miley Cyrus takes this one with 'Flowers'.

She appears via video message.

"The real award is having this song loved," she says - to massive acclaim from the O2 crowd.

"I know this video is a little short but I just wanted it to match my dress," she adds.

Next up - international song of the year

Billie Eilish's What Was I Made For? made up the soundtrack for the biggest film of 2023 (Barbie, in case you've been out of the loop), and is Oscar nominated, so will be a hard one to beat.

But, there's tough competition from Miley Cyrus's Flowers...

Here are the nominees:

  • Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For?
  • David Kushner - Daylight
  • Doja Cat - Paint The Town Red
  • Jazzy - Giving Me
  • Libianca - People
  • Meghan Trainor - Made You Look
  • Miley Cyrus - Flowers
