A 26-year-old British man has died after falling from a bridge in Spain, according to local authorities.

He fell while climbing the Castilla-La Mancha bridge in Talavera de la Reina - a city in central Spain - the local mayor's office said in a statement on Sunday.

Councillor for citizen safety, Macarena Munoz, said the man was accompanied by a 24-year-old British national, and that the pair had travelled to the bridge to "create content" for social media.

"We have been able to find out, they had come to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social networks, which has resulted in this unfortunate and sad outcome," Ms Munoz said.

The Castilla-La Mancha bridge was built in 2011 and stands over the Tagus River.

A cable-stayed bridge, it consists of a main concrete pylon with multiple cables coming from the centre in a triangular shape.

Standing at 192m (630ft) high, it was the tallest cable-stayed bridge in Spain at the time of its opening.
