Glenys and Eric Holmes spent a year planning their dream holiday to Vietnam, which they hoped would be a celebration after Mr Holmes had a prostate cancer scare.

But the luxurious, sentimental trip soon turned into a nightmare.

The Manchester couple, who are in their fifties, left London's Heathrow Airport with Vietnam Airlines on 1 March, on a flight unknowingly carrying passengers who had tested positive for coronavirus.

Fast forward a week, and they say they're stuck in a dirty, unhygienic hospital, and have "been abandoned" by the UK government who will not send them translators as they struggle through language barriers with Vietnamese authorities.

The UK's Foreign Office says it is providing assistance to all British citizens affected.

Couple confined in 'filthy' hospital

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Holmes said the couple landed in Hanoi and took an overnight train to their "boutique hotel spa" in Sapa, where they were told nine people had been infected on their flight and that they too would need to be tested.

"We were told we needed to be isolated so stayed in our room for around two days," Mr Holmes said.

"It was five star and very nice, so we were happy."

But after days of isolation, reception staff woke them up with a phone call on the morning of 9 March to say "they were coming to take us away in 30 minutes".

"It wasn't explained to us where we would be going," Mr Holmes said.

"We'd previously had health checks done, but we were put straight into an ambulance and driven to hospital."

Mr Holmes said they were told they would await their coronavirus test results at the hospital, where they were offered rooms that were "absolutely disgusting".

"There were cockroaches on the floor, stained, dirty bedding, floor and toilet was filthy. It was a disgrace. We refused to go in there," he said.

"We rang the embassy, and were basically told... to do as we'd been told and if we didn't that our human rights would be at risk."

He said it was "absolutely disgraceful" and "just not acceptable".

Mr Holmes said they had to repeat statements to police four times.

"We had to tell them where we'd been and who we've had contact with. But there's no translation. We've got Vietnamese policemen on the phone asking questions that we've already answered to the authorities several times and they just don't seem to get it," he said.

"They keep asking us, 'Who did you speak to when you were in Hanoi?' but we don't even know the names of the bars we went in, plus we kept to ourselves. We've tried to tell them this several times, but they just say they want more detail."

Mr Holmes said he felt they've "been abandoned" by the UK government.

"The embassy hasn't sent translators, nobody's helping us, that's the way we see it. We understand we have to be in isolation - we don't have a problem with that - but it's the facilities that we've been put in that are disgraceful."

Mr Holmes said there was no hot water in the hospital and the couple had not been given clean masks.

"It's just shocking," he said.

"There are other people here but we're not really mixing with the other people apart from another British couple who are also in the same boat. We just want to get home."

The UK's Foreign Office did not comment on the specific case, but told Sky News it was "in close contact with the Vietnamese authorities dealing with COVID-19 cases linked to a Vietnam Airlines flight from London that arrived in Hanoi on 2 March".

"We are providing consular assistance to the British people affected," the statement continued.

"We advise all British nationals in Vietnam to follow our travel advice, which is kept under constant review."

The couple said they expected to get their coronavirus results on Tuesday.

Travel restrictions may be imposed for Britons travelling to Vietnam after the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country rose to 30.
