A "callous and uncaring" thief who stole mobile phones and personal items from healthcare workers in hospitals at the height of the coronavirus lockdown has been jailed.

Wayne Bradley was given a four-and-a-half year term after he "conned and tailgated" staff to gain access to restricted areas.

The 30-year-old broke into a care complex, a women's hospital and a children's hospital while the UK was gripped by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Bradley - from Bartley Green in Birmingham - was already banned from medical facilities after similar previous offences.

Sergeant Julia Slater of West Midlands Police said: "Bradley is a callous and uncaring career criminal who has gone out of his way to deliberately target the most vulnerable in society.

"While the rest of the country was in lockdown doing all they could to stop the spread of the virus, he was going out to steal from those people most at risk, and most shocking of all, to steal from the selfless members of the NHS who were putting their own safety on the line to help save others.

"We are pleased to see the courts agreed with us about the seriousness of Bradley's offending, and this sentence should keep the public safe for the foreseeable future."

Bradley was arrested after stealing mobile phones from Birmingham Children's Hospital on 15 April - a week after he stole a purse from Solihull Hospital.

The country had been put into lockdown less than a month earlier, with Boris Johnson announcing measures to fight the pandemic in the UK on 23 March.

An investigation by West Midlands Police found that Bradley had also stolen a laptop from a cardiac unit at the children's hospital.

He was further linked to offences committed at a care complex in Bournville and Birmingham Women's Hospital.

Bradley pleaded guilty to the thefts and breaching his Criminal Behaviour Order at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday.
