Vladimir Putin has installed "disinfectant tunnels" at two of his residences to protect himself from coronavirus.

The safety tunnels - which will douse the Russian president's visitors with a mist of antibacterial solution - have been introduced at both his main Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow and the Kremlin.

Video of the contraption in use shows men passing through the tunnel, while briefly pausing to receive a spray of the solution from above and from the sides.

This is to ensure their clothes and any exposed skin are covered with the disinfectant, according to the state-controlled RIA news agency.

Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the tunnels had been installed to coincide with Russia hitting the peak of its COVID-19 outbreak, which is now said to have passed.

They were manufactured by a Russian company based out of Penza.

Back in April, Mr Peskov said anyone meeting the president would undergo a coronavirus test first in order to keep the disease at a distance.

The spokesman later confirmed in May that he had caught the virus himself.

Russia has the third highest number of confirmed coronavirus infections in the world behind the US and Brazil, having recorded more than half a million cases.

It has also recorded 7,478 deaths - however there are doubts about the accuracy of this figure due to it being much lower than other nations with high case counts.

Lockdown restrictions are now being eased in Moscow as officials say the city has passed the peak of the virus, but some measures at the Kremlin remain.

Mr Peskov has said extra precaution for the president is "completely justified".

Mr Putin has spent little time at the Kremlin during pandemic - opting instead to chair video conferences and run the country from his residence outside of the capital.
