Coronavirus: Why has Peterborough had six McDonald's locations reopen when the North has none?

Whereas those living in some larger cities are yet to get their hands on a Big Mac, people in Peterborough are spoiled for choice.

McDonald's fans in Peterborough were elated when it was announced that drive-thru restaurants were going to reopen - but the fast food chain has been accused of going "over the top".

Whereas those living in some larger cities are yet to get their hands on a Big Mac or a McFlurry, people in Peterborough have six locations to choose from.

One local, Joe McNamara, said: "I'm happy that some have reopened but I think six is a bit excessive.

"Don't get me wrong, I love a Maccies, but six in a small city is a bit too much."

Callum McAdie, a 21-year-old key worker, said the drive-thru he went to was busy, but "everyone was civil and obeyed the staff directing the cars".

He added: "I was very surprised to see six on the list for sure, and yes I would say it's over the top, especially as bigger cities haven't had any reopen.

"But Peterborough is well-linked for transport and maybe useful for other key workers on the roads."

A total of 44 McDonald's restaurants have now reopened - with Peterborough getting special treatment because of how it is close to one of its distribution centres.

"We are working hard to expand our restaurant reopenings to all drive-thrus across the UK and Ireland by early June," a spokesman added.

Unfortunately for McDonald's, not everyone understands.

One exasperated customer on Twitter wrote: "How can they justify opening six in Peterborough but none in Wales, Scotland or north England?"
