Delayed catamaran begins sailings on Scotland's west coast

The vessel will run a non-bookable, turn-up-and-go service for the first two weeks to allow for "familiarisation" and to determine if the passage and turnaround times are "realistic" says CalMac.

A chartered catamaran has entered service with CalMac on Scotland's west coast following a number of delays.

MV Alfred was expected to begin its nine-month loan in April.

The date was pushed back after Pentland Ferries was unable to release the vessel due to issues with its replacement, MV Pentalina.

The charter was further postponed to allow for the servicing of MV Alfred's hydraulic systems.

Following the completion of berthing trials, the boat has now been deployed between Ardrossan in North Ayrshire and Brodick on Arran.

A technical problem with its starboard thruster means it is unable to join CalMac's Islay service for now. Work is currently under way to resolve this.

The boat will run a non-bookable, turn-up-and-go service for the first two weeks to allow for "familiarisation" and to determine if the passage and turnaround times are "realistic", CalMac said.

There will be two return services a day and the vessel will berth overnight in Ardrossan.

Alfred has been deemed suitable for use at other ports, including Lochmaddy and Ullapool. However, extensive ramp modifications are required for it to be deployed at Troon or Campbeltown.

The Scottish government has provided £9m for the loan of the boat.

Robbie Drummond, chief executive of CalMac, said: "We very much welcome the introduction into service of MV Alfred and the resilience that she will offer.

"Her addition should mitigate the impact of disruption or when certain islands are reduced to single vessel service.

"The main route to and from Arran has been operating with one vessel for some time, so the addition of MV Alfred will provide much-needed support to the local community."
