Jane Fonda has paid tribute to her former partner, revealing she was "stunned" to hear of his death.
Writing on Instagram, the Barbarella star said: "He was my fascinating co-star in Klute and we loved working together.
"Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared quite a few adventures with me, such as the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam war tour that performed for 60,000 active duty soldiers, sailors, and marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Japan in 1971. I am heartbroken."
The pair dated for a while.
Losing Donald Sutherland "really profoundly hurts", his MASH co-star Elliott Gould has said.
"Donald was a giant - not only physically but as a talent," Gould added.
"He was also enormously kind and generous."
He explained: "It's never easy losing the calibre of human being and actor like Donald Sutherland, but this one really profoundly hurts because Donald was like my brother, and a big part of my own career."
Donald Sutherland was a "great Canadian", the country's prime minister Justin Trudeau has said.
He commented on X: "We've lost one of the greats.
"Donald Sutherland brought a level of brilliance to his craft few could match.
"A remarkable, legendary actor 鈥� and a great Canadian.
"Rest in peace, Donald."
Rob Lowe has described Donald Sutherland as "one of our greatest actors".
Lowe, known for The West Wing and dozens of movies, said it was his "honour" to work with Sutherland "many years ago".
The pair starred in miniseries Salem's Lot in 2004.
"I will never forget his charisma and ability," Lowe said on X.
"If you want a master class in acting, watch him in Ordinary People.
"My condolences to Kiefer."
Jon Cassar, who directed both Donald and Kiefer Sutherland in 2015 movie Forsaken, has said the actor "created unique and believable characters every time he stepped in front of the camera".
"Sad news today - we lost a legend," Cassar said on X.
"I was one of the fortunate directors to have worked with him and got to see the brilliance up close.
"RIP, sir."
Helen Mirren has described Donald Sutherland as "one of the smartest actors I ever worked with".
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, she said: "He had a wonderful enquiring brain, and a great knowledge on a wide variety of subjects."
He also "combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity", the actress, known for her lead role in The Queen, said.
"This all made him into the legend of film that he became.
"He was my colleague and became my friend.
"I will miss his presence in this world."
Elijah Wood, the actor who rose to fame playing Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, has posted a brief tribute on X.
"Aww man, farewell," he said.
His post is dominated by a grainy, atmospheric black and white photograph, showing Donald Sutherland in his prime.
Brenda Blethyn, the English actress known for productions including police drama Vera, has paid tribute to Donald Sutherland.
The pair played Mr and Mrs Bennett in the 2005 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, which also starred Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennett and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr Darcy.
She wrote on X that she was "so so sad" to hear the Canadian actor had died.
"Working with him on Pride and Prejudice was a joy," she added.
