The first results rolled in just after midnight, with no huge surprises. Trump won Indiana and Kentucky. Clinton won Vermont.

The result in North Carolina was too close to call.

The state everyone was looking at was Florida - commentators predicted that if Clinton wins this state, she'll take an easy ride to the White House.

The exit poll, released after polls closed at around 1am, gave Clinton 48% of the vote and Trump a close 46%.

After the early exit poll for Florida was announced, Hillary Clinton went on to take a clean sweep of electoral votes in states including: Massachusetts, Illinois, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and the District of Colombia.

2am brought around a new set of state results, with Trump taking a majority. Trump won Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Wyoming and North and South Dakota. 

Clinton won New York and its 29 electoral college votes.

Bringing a glimmer of hope back to the race, Clinton wins Virginia, taking 13 electoral college votes with her. Virginia was another key swing state in the race.

03:36 The New York Times gives Trump a 93% probability of winning

04:00 Clinton pushes over the 200 votes mark

Winning California, Hawaii and Washington with a total of 71 votes gives Clinton a total of 202 votes. This puts her ahead of Trump, who has 188, however there are still several states left to call. 

Minutes later, Trump wins North Carolina - a key swing state - and 15 electoral colleges.

This win gave Trump six electoral college votes.

This win gave Trump 29 electoral college votes. It was a close call for this state - one of the big swing states in the election, but after a drawn out count Trump eventually clinched it.

Sarah Palin: 'Britain and the US are going rogue'

Trump wins Iowa and Georgia, bringing his total votes up to 244, while Clinton takes Nevada to push her total up to 215. 

President Trump seems ever more likely, however US election analyst Todd Donovan says it could be possibly that both candidates end up in a tie with 269 votes each - which would take the election to Congress.

The Hispanic and Latino vote

Despite the assumption that Trump's aggressive rhetoric and threats to build a wall between the US and Mexico could alienate the Hispanic and Latino vote, it appears the national exit poll shows more people from the Hispanic and Latino community voted for Trump (29%) than they did Mitt Romney (27%) four years ago.

With victories in Pennsylvania, the Republicans regained control in the Senate, having earlier taken back control in the House of Representatives.

John Podesta, Clinton's campaign chairman, tells the rally that they aren't giving up yet. Speaking to the crowd, he says: "It's been a long night and campaign but we can wait a little longer can't we?"

It looks as though Clinton will not concede the presidency until all counts are finished.

After one of the most controversial campaigns in election history, Donald Trump has been elected the 45th President of the United States. 

His Vice President Mike Pence took to the stage at his rally in New York to deliver a speech, congratulating Trump on his win. 

Shortly after, Trump came to the stage to give his acceptance speech, where he revealed Clinton had called him to concede the election.
