Fire at Bristol Airport car park destroys vehicles

A Bristol Airport spokesperson tells Sky News the fire spread to "a small number of vehicles" and it would contact the owners of any damaged cars "as soon as possible". The airport's runway was briefly closed, with some minor delays to flights.

A fire at Bristol Airport's car park has destroyed vehicles and caused delays to flights.

The blaze broke out in the Silver Zone cark park on Sunday morning.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said 11 cars were on fire - with four or five vehicles "completely destroyed", according to Bristol Live.

Video footage posted on social media showed heavy smoke billowing from the car park.

The airport runway was closed briefly as a safety precaution but has since reopened. Minor delays to flights were reported.

A spokesperson for the airport told Sky News a parked vehicle had caught fire in the open-air car park.

"The fire spread to a small number of vehicles," the spokesperson said.

"There were no injuries, and the fire was quickly put out by the emergency services.

"We'll contact the owners of any damaged cars as soon as possible."

The fire service told Bristol Live the blaze is not being treated as suspicious as it appears to have been caused by "accidental ignition".

Crews managed to extinguish the fire by around 12pm.

In October, a huge fire at Luton Airport car park damaged hundreds of vehicles and led to flight delays and cancellations, affecting tens of thousands of passengers.
