A firearm was found in a car carrying the man shot by police during an operation on the M62 in West Yorkshire.

Mohammed Yassar Yaqub, a 28-year-old father-of-two, at around 6pm yesterday.

The planned operation followed information about criminal possession of a firearm but was not terrorism related, police said.

The circumstances of Mr Yaqub's death are being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

In a statement, it said: "What appears to be a non-police issue firearm was discovered in the vehicle in which Mr Yaqub was travelling and is being further examined."

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: "My thoughts are with Mr Yaqub's family and all those affected at this difficult time.

"Though in its early stages, this investigation is making good progress but will be complex.

There were five people arrested during the operation: three at the scene and another two from a related stop of a vehicle in the Chain Bar area of Bradford at around the same time, according to West Yorkshire Police.

Two were later released on bail.

Several of those arrested needed hospital treatment for injuries "not related to firearm discharge", but no officers were hurt.

Mr Yaqub's lawyers said his family was "in shock" and "distraught".

In a statement, they added: "The family are fully aware that the incident that led to the death of Mr Yaqub is currently being investigated by the IPCC and they do not wish to make any further comment at this stage."
