Researchers believe hundreds of Britons who died as a result of serving in the First World War are not recorded on official lists.

A group of volunteers working with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is searching for men and women who were missed off the official lists of war dead.

Some died of their injuries after being discharged from the forces, while the deaths of some others were wrongly classified.

Terry Denham, the founder of the In From The Cold Project, wants anyone who thinks a relative might have been overlooked to get in touch.

"It's always worth checking, because quite often a death occurred because of an illness directly attributable to their service," he said.

Under strict rules governing who qualifies for an official WWI war grave victims must have died between August 1914 and August 1921 as a result of their service.

When Terry's team of self-funded volunteers find a qualifying name that is missing from official lists they pass them to the CWGC for confirmation.

Sgt Andrew Neil of the 5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers is one of the unsung heroes whose unmarked grave was discovered by the project in Wallsend on Tyneside.

His grandson, Peter Caffrey, knew that Sgt Neil had been blinded on the Western Front and had died in 1919 after being discharged from the army, but he had no marked grave to visit.

"We knew our grandfather was in this cemetery but we didn't know where was," Peter explained as he walked me though the jumble of gravestones next to St Peter's Church.

Peter's wife Marie contacted the In From The Cold Team to ask for help in locating Sgt Neil, whose grave is now marked with a white marble headstone provided by the CWGC.

"It's recognition for him," she said. 

"It's a man who gave his eyes and his life for his country and lay in an unmarked grave.

"Now he has what he deserves."
