Four people have been arrested after a suspected stolen car plunged into a canal in Leicester.
The vehicle smashed through fencing and crashed into the Grand Union Canal on Friday night after it allegedly failed to stop for police.
Three men and a woman were taken to hospital after they were rescued from the car.
The men were later discharged, although the woman remained in hospital. Her injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
Leicestershire police said: "Officers attempted to stop a car in Vaughan Way, Leicester, around 9.15pm yesterday following concerns about the manner in which the vehicle was being driven.
"The car later collided with fencing and entered the Grand Union Canal.
"Three men, aged 28, 24 and 23, and a 23-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and theft of a motor vehicle."
A crane and floodlights were quickly deployed on the scene after the crash to help lift the car out of the canal overnight.
The two-hour recovery operation involved fire crews and recovery specialists and lasted until the early hours of Saturday.
Enquiries are continuing, according to the police.
A witness told the Leicester Mercury: "There were six fire engines, at least 15 police cars and four ambulances at the scene.
"They pulled four people, three men and a woman, in their early 20s out and they were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary.
"The fire service rescued them from the canal. I saw one of the people from the car being taken into an ambulance.
"The operation to recover the vehicle from the water was long and tricky and went on until about 2am."
Another witness who lived close to the scene of the incident told the paper: "I heard the police helicopter flying overhead at about quarter past nine so I knew something was going on."
Another said that the helicopter's searchlight and the police sirens are so frequent for them that they "hardly take any notice any more, but it disturbs the dogs."
