Germany train crash: Five killed and 44 people injured after train derails

A police spokesperson said the Munich-bound train had been quite full at the time it crashed and a local newspaper reported that several school students were on board.

Five people have been killed and 44 others injured after a train derailed in southern Germany.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash in the mountainous region north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria on Friday.

Police tweeted that some of the 44 people hurt are suffering serious injuries.

Emergency workers found bodies under the rubble of the train as cranes hoisted at least one carriage which had rolled off the tracks.

Several school students were on board the train, a local newspaper reported.

Regional and national politicians visited the site and expressed their shock.

A police spokesperson said the Munich-bound train had been quite full at the time it crashed north of the Bavarian ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

They added that 60 people had been on board the train at the time of the crash.

Pictures showed carriages of the double-decker train stuck between tree branches, having rolled down a hill.

People could also be seen being carried away on stretchers.
