Almost 40 years after they first answered the call, the original Ghostbusters are heading back to the big screen.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is billed as a direct follow-up to the 1984 original and its 1989 sequel, ignoring the events of the all-female reboot starring Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon from 2016.

The first trailer has finally been released after a good deal of teasing from director Jason Reitman, boasting plenty of intrigue to keep fans on tenterhooks until it hits cinemas next summer.

Are the original crew taking a back seat?

Despite all the excitement surrounding the return of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver, none of them are seen in the trailer beyond old footage from the original Ghostbusters.

Instead the focus is on child stars Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard, who along with their mother (Carrie Coon) are seen moving into a creepy rural mansion that belonged to their grandfather.

We learn their grandfather is none other than Dr Egon Spengler, played by the late Harold Ramis in the first two films, and the trailer suggests the film will see them and teacher Paul Rudd uncovering more about his legacy.

Will Ecto-1 draw Venkman and co out of hiding?

Much like the new Star Wars trilogy, it seems it is time for the old guard to let the newcomers take centre stage.

But one star of the original films that does make a crowd-pleasing appearance in the Afterlife trailer is Ecto-1, with the sighting of the famous old car being greeted by a frenzy on social media.

The promise of some classic Ecto-1 action will allow fans to revel in nostalgia, and its a safe bet that it could end up being what draws the original crew back into the fold too.

Are we kissing goodbye to New York?

Setting a Ghostbusters film outside Manhattan sounds akin to moving EastEnders out of Albert Square, but Afterlife appears to be swapping the Big Apple for small town America.

Mostly thanks to the works of Stephen King, such a setting has become synonymous with creepy tales of the supernatural that have since inspired the likes of Stranger Things.

There are few laughs to be had in the Afterlife trailer, which is in fact rather evocative of the hit Netflix show in which young actor Wolfhard made his name.

What ghosts need busting?

The 2016 reboot relied on familiar monsters like Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man to battle the heroes and it seems as though there will be more returnees from the original films this time.

We get a glimpse of an entity that certainly looks similar to Slimer, albeit with more a blue than green tinge, plus the memorable demonic Terror Dogs that spooked Rick Moranis in the first film.

Thankfully Grace's science geek Phoebe is seen wielding a Proton Pack, so she should be well equipped to take on whatever the baddies can throw at her.
