A light aircraft made an emergency landing on a busy road near Gloucester.

The aircraft was forced to land on the central reservation of the A40 Golden Valley bypass, between Gloucester and Cheltenham, at around 6pm today.

The road was subsequently shut in both directions between the A417 and J11 of the M5 due to what was described as an "aviation incident".

Gloucestershire Police said they were called to the scene and the road has since been re-opened.

A witness who saw the plane on the road while travelling on a bus, 17-year-old Vesper Gray Smith, said: "I felt pretty surprised, as it's really not something that happens often.

"I think everyone else on the bus was quite surprised as well.

"One of the first things I thought about the incident is if everyone is alright, and luckily they were."
