Shoppers looking for bargains were shocked to find pornography playing on a giant TV screen in a sportswear shop.

The graphic images were played on the screen at the Asics store in Auckland in New Zealand early on Sunday morning after hackers broke into the shop's system.

Dwayne Hinagano, a security officer who witnessed the screening, said a sex video ran for almost two hours and was seen by people when they walked past the shop.

"It's not something anyone who comes to Queen Street early on Sunday morning would expect," Mr Hinagano told the New Zealand Herald.

Another witness said the explicit display had been running from as early as 1am.

Tanya Lee, 29, was with her seven-year-old son when she looked up and saw the video.

Ms Lee said: "I took a second look because I just couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"It's totally inappropriate and offensive, not something that you want kids exposed to and it's also embarrassing for Auckland as a tourist destination."

Asics apologised to anyone who saw the adult-rated content.

In a Facebook post, the store said: "This morning an unknown person gained access to the screens above our Central Auckland store and some objectionable content was displayed on the screens.

"We would like to apologise to anyone who may have seen this.

"We are working with our software and online security suppliers to ensure this doesn't happen again."
