The Duke and Duchess of Sussex hugged and elbow-bumped well-wishers as they made their final public appearance before returning to Canada to continue their lives away from the Royal Family.

The couple attended the annual Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey, alongside the Queen, William and Kate, and Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

It was the first time Harry and Meghan had been seen with the rest of the senior royals since the couple negotiated a deal to step back from their roles in January.

The prime minister was also at the event, and was joined by his pregnant fiancee, Carrie Symonds.

Harry and Meghan smiled and waved at William and Kate as they arrived in the abbey to take their seats behind them.

The service was the last time Harry and Meghan worked alongside the entire Windsor family as they end their UK farewell tour, and look to carve out a "progressive new role", becoming financially independent and spending much of their time in Canada.

The service is a major event on the royal calendar, largely because the 93-year-old monarch has embraced the organisation for much of her life.

The Queen became head of the network of 54 countries when she was only 26 years old in 1952.

As they left the service, both Kate and Meghan spoke to schoolchildren outside Westminster Abbey.

Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, will stop using their HRH titles and they will also not use "royal" in their branding - while Harry, who will remain a prince, will relinquish his military titles.
