Operation Enduring Freedom was launched in Afghanistan by the US and its allies following the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.
More than 2,000 service people from the US, 456 from the UK and hundreds of others from American allies - as well as tens of thousands of Afghan militants, security personnel and civilians - have died since the invasion in 2001, and billions of dollars and pounds in aid has gone into shoring up the regime that replaced the ousted Taliban.
The UK and US withdrew most of their combat troops in 2013, turning over responsibility for security to the Afghan National Forces - but there has been continuing violence. Blasts in Kabul in the last few days are just the latest in a series of attacks that have killed hundreds across the country in the last 12 months.
The British government says it continues to be in the UK's interest to provide support to Afghanistan.
