How to get around Paddington station closure

Severely damaged overhead lines mean the station will be closed for much of the day, with no trains running in or out.

Commuters and holidaymakers face disruption this morning as Paddington station has been closed after damage to overhead wires.

Network Rail engineers are working to restore the lines and to recover stranded trains, but it is thought there will be disruption all day.

Engineers hope to have two of the four lines back up and running by midday, to help ease the problems.

How to get to London from the west

Those travelling into London from the west should take the trains into Waterloo, Euston or Marylebone.

Great Western Railway has said South Western Railway is accepting GWR tickets between London Waterloo and Windsor/Reading. Chiltern Railways is accepting GWR tickets between London Marylebone, Oxford and Banbury.

GWR services will be stopping and starting from Reading, and the operator is running a reduced service between Reading and Slough.

What will services look like?

The Paddington to Didcot Parkway GWR service will be a local stopping service, with customers then needing to switch to a South Western line.

The service between West Ealing and Greenford is suspended, and passengers should use the Underground or London buses.

Train services from Bedwyn to Paddington will stop at Reading, with passengers needing to swap to South Western Rail between Waterloo and Windsor.

Services from Swansea to Paddington will run hourly, and stop at Reading. National rail advises using Transport for Wales between Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central and between Newport (South Wales) and Swansea.

An hourly train service is running from Reading to Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance, and customers can use CrossCountry between Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Temple Meads, Exeter, Plymouth and Penzance and South Western Railway between Exeter St Davids, Basingstoke and London Waterloo.

The through train between Paddington and Cheltenham Spa is suspended, with passengers advised to change at Swindon for alternative routes.

Passengers can use CrossCountry between Bristol Temple Meads and Cheltenham.

There's also a reduced service between Hereford, Great Malvern and Worcester to Oxford and Reading in the morning. A limited service between Oxford and Worcester will run in the afternoon.

TfL services will be suspended until at least 2pm.

Where can I use my ticket?

GWR customers can use the London Underground between Paddington, Marylebone, Euston and Waterloo.

Buses can be used between Paddington and Slough.

Customers can also use services from Chiltern Railways, West Midland Railways, Virgin Trains, CrossCountry and Transport for Wales.

How to get to and from Heathrow

The Piccadilly line runs from Earl's Court to all Heathrow Terminals.

From Paddington, take the District line to Earl's Court, where you can change for the Piccadilly line to the airport.

There are also rail replacement bus services running between Heathrow and Paddington.
