Trump not keen on Iran talks - but says meeting with Tehran is due next week

Asked if he is interested in resuming nuclear talks with Iran, Donald Trump says he's "not".

"The way I look at it, they fought, the war's done," he says.

"I could get a statement that they're not going to go nuclear. We're probably going to ask for that, but they're not going to be doing it, but they're not going to be doing it anyway."

After giving the floor briefly to his top diplomat Marco Rubio - who said they're open to anyone interested in peace - he's pushed again on his stance.

"Look, we're going to talk to them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement. I don't know," he says.

"To me, I don't think it's that necessary. I mean, they had a war. They fought. Now they're going back to their world. I don't care if I have an agreement or not."

He adds: "The only thing I would be asking for is what we were asking for before, about - we want no nuclear, but we destroyed the nuclear."

Trump says he's 'very surprised' by Putin and believes Russian president has been 'misguided'

Answering a question about whether Vladimir Putin has any territorial ambitions beyond Ukraine, the US president says "it's possible".

"I know one thing, he'd like to settle. He'd like to get out of this thing, it's a mess for him," he says.

He went on to list several conflicts the US "took care of", including India and Pakistan's recent conflict, and says he thinks they should have ended the Ukraine-Russia war by now.

He says he thinks the Russian president has "been misguided" and adds: "I'm very surprised actually. I thought we should have settled that easily."

Trump says he is not giving up pressure on Iran

In the previous question, Trump was asked if he was giving up his campaign of maximum pressure on Iran, after signalling he may ease sanctions.

Trump said he was not giving up on pressure, but also said Iran will need money and trade to rebuild after the recent conflict with Israel.

He repeatedly spoke about selling US oil to China, instead of Iranian oil.

But he said he didn't want to do that, suggesting he would welcome a return to global trade for Iran.

But, as with many answers during this conference, Trump rambled across many topics in his reply - leaving his approach to Iran and sanctions unclear.

Trump denies relying on Israeli intelligence

Donald Trump has turned to a question from CNN, which he labels "fake news".

Asked if he is relying on Israeli intelligence to assess the impact of US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Trump has a direct answer.

"No," he says.

"We've collected additional intelligence, and we've also spoken to people who've seen the site.

"The site is obliterated, and we think everything nuclear is down there. They didn't take it out."

Trump suggests Iran-Israel war 'could maybe start again soon some day'

Donald Trump is now taking questions from the media, with the first being a question on what makes him so confident the war between Israel and Iran is over.

"Because I dealt with both and they're both tired, exhausted," he says.

"They've fought very hard and very viciously, very violently, and they were both satisfied to go home and get out."

But the US president adds: "I guess some day it could maybe start again soon."

He says the two sides "fought a hell of a war" and then claims the war ended when the US hit Iran's nuclear sites.

He then goes on to attack the "fake news" reporting about a US intelligence report saying the strikes did not destroy Iran's nuclear enrichment capabilities, as he has done throughout the day.

'Nuclear stuff' is down in 'devastated' Iranian bases, Trump claims

The US president is giving more on the strikes on Iranian nuclear sites now.

Donald Trump insists again they were "obliterated", after hitting out at reports in the media that the damage is not what he's made it out to be.

"You can't get into the tunnels," he adds.

"They can't. There's nothing. There's no way you can even get down.

"And the whole thing is collapsed and a disaster. And I think all of the nuclear stuff is down there, because it's very hard to remove.

"And we did it very quickly, when they heard we were coming."

He also says every strike hit "within nine inches" of the target.

Trump says he wants to get Ukraine-Russia war 'solved'

Donald Trump briefly touches on the Ukraine war during his remarks, saying: "Hopefully we're going to get that solved."

He goes on to repeat remarks he has made several times before, saying: "It should have never happened, it would have never happened if I was president. I've said that a thousand times."

The US president says it is vital the increase in NATO spending is spent on "very serious military hardware, not bureaucracy" and says he hopes the hardware "is going to be made in America, because we have the very best hardware in the world".

As we reported earlier, Trump and Volodymyr ZelenAG百家乐在线官网y have met on the sidelines of the summit today.

'We think it's over', Trump says on Iran-Israel conflict

Donald Trump's starts his remarks by thanking the Netherlands for hosting the NATO summit and praising the US military.

He again hails US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites - the success of which has been called under question - as "obliteration".

"This incredible exercise of American strength has paved the way for peace with a historic ceasefire agreement late Monday," he says.

He goes on to talk up his own role in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

"And, we call it the 12-day war. I spoke to a few people. I guess that just sounded like the right name. It was a 12-day war," he adds.

"And we think it's over. I don't think they're going to be going back at each other. I don't think so."

He says the US has also "reasserted the credibility of American deterrence", which is "like no other".

Rutte thinks Trump 'deserves all the praise' when asked by Sky about flattery

NATO's chief has been under the spotlight over the past 24 hours for his language towards Donald Trump.

The president shared a text he received from Mark Rutte yesterday, written with particularly gushing language.

Today, he referred to him as "daddy" when it comes to resolving the Iran-Israel conflict - see our 13.22 post for more on that.

Our security and defence editor Deborah Haynes asked at his news conference a short while ago if this flattery makes him look weak.

"No, I don't think so, I think it's a bit of a question of taste, but I think he's a good friend," he said.

He also credited Trump for driving an increased commitment among the alliance to up defence spending.

Rutte added: "Doesn't he deserve some praise?

"And when it comes to Iran, the fact that he took this decisive action, very targeted, to make sure that Iran would not be able to get its hands on a nuclear capability, I think he deserves all the praise."
