Are Trump and Clinton really neck and neck?

With Hillary Clinton's handling of sensitive information again under investigation from the FBI, headlines have suggested Donald Trump is 'surging' in the polls and that the two are now 'neck-and-neck' in the race to become President.

That's not quite right.

RealClear Politics' poll average shows Mrs Clinton with a three-point lead - 48% to 45%.

While some polls, notably including the latest ABC/Washington Post poll, show the two main candidates effectively tied, others continue to show bigger leads for Clinton.

But that lead is down from a peak of eight points a couple of weeks ago - it's certainly not all rosy for her.

More on Donald Trump

The race was already tightening prior to the FBI probe news - primarily from undecided voters and supporters of third parties moving to Mr Trump, with Mrs Clinton's support remaining fairly stable.

There is no strong evidence as yet that the new FBI review will affect the polls, however.

There have been eight polls released that have conducted fieldwork partly after the FBI announcement - and none of them have shown a significant change.

And this morning the Morning Consult released the first poll with fieldwork conducted entirely after the announcement, which showed Clinton with a three-point lead - unchanged from their previous results.

Of course, this is obviously only one poll, with all the caveats that come with that. But so far there is no evidence that it will have a significant impact on the race.

Trump's problem with the truth

Recent polls have also shown Clinton with an edge in a number of key swing states. One poll from the New York Times/Siena College showing Trump with a four-point lead in Florida has garnered a lot of attention, but three other polls released over the weekend showed Clinton with a one-point lead in the Sunshine State.

And while winning Florida would all but guarantee Mrs Clinton victory, it is not a must-win for her - particularly with leads in the likes of North Carolina, Colorado and Pennsylvania.

The race is tightening, but Hillary Clinton is still ahead - at least for now.
