An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of raping an 11-year-old girl on the Isle of Portland.

The alleged attack is reported to have happened at a disused stone tower on the Dorset island in the early hours of Saturday.

Dorset Police said the teenager was arrested on suspicion of rape and has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Detective Sergeant Paul Chessell said: "We understand there may be concern from the local community in relation to this incident but I would like to reassure members of the public that a full investigation is under way in relation to this report.

"The victim is being supported by specially trained officers and residents may see increased police activity in the area as this matter is investigated.

"I would urge members of the public to refrain from speculation in relation to this incident, particularly on social media, as it could impact the ongoing investigation."

A police cordon was in place on Saturday and forensic teams were seen at the site, the Dorset Echo reported.
