Iran threatens to close key world shipping lane

Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to continued Israeli attacks.

In an interview with state media outlet Mehr, a member of Iran's national security board said Iran had "numerous options to respond to the enemies".

Closing the economically important waterway remained an option, an official named as Saeedi said.

He added: "The enemies of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran should know that if there is a threat against our homeland and people, they will certainly face a crushing response."

For context:

The strait lies between Oman and Iran and links the Gulf north of it with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond.

About a fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through the strait, near the city of Khor Fakkan.

Iranian reactor contained 'no nuclear material' when hit by Israel, watchdog says

The Iranian nuclear reactor hit this morning was "not operational" when it was struck by Israel, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said.

The nuclear watchdog said Khondab, formerly called Arak, was under construction at the time Israel struck it.

"It was not operational and contained no nuclear material, so no radiological effects," it added.

The IAEA said it had no information on whether the neighbouring water plant was damaged as well.

The reactor is located near Natanz, a key part of Iran's nuclear infrastructure.

Mapped: Israel and Iran's strikes as fighting enters seventh day

Sky News' data and forensics team has been tracking and documenting the back-and-forth attacks between Israel and Iran.

Israel says it hits three nuclear sites

The Israeli military says it has struck nuclear sites in Bushehr, Isfahan and Natanz and continues to attack other facilities.

Bushehr is Iran's only operating nuclear power plant, which sits on the Gulf coast.

It uses Russian fuel that Russia then takes back when it is spent to reduce proliferation risk.

Iranian supreme leader 'cannot continue to exist', says Israeli minister

Speaking after the latest wave of Iranian missiles, Israel's defence minister has said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei "cannot continue to exist".

Israel Katz said: "A dictator like Khamenei, who heads a country like Iran and has made the destruction of Israel his mission, cannot continue to exist."

The IDF has been "instructed", he added, and knows that "in order to achieve all of its goals, this man absolutely should not continue to exist".

That comes after US officials said this week that Donald Trump vetoed Israel's plot to kill Khamenei.

Trump himself later said there are no plans to kill him "at least for now".

Iran confirms meeting with UK and European counterparts

Iran's foreign minister has confirmed he is due to meet with his British and European counterparts tomorrow, state media says.

We reported earlier, see our 7.03 post, that David Lammy would be attending the meeting.

Now foreign minister Abbas Araghchi will travel to Geneva for the meetings on Friday, the state-run IRNA news agency reports.

I felt I had to go back to help Gaza's hospitals, says British plastic surgeon

Before the launch of Gaza: Doctors On The Frontline on Sky News at 9pm tonight, Dr Victoria Rose, a consultant plastic surgeon who worked in Gaza twice last year, gives her first-hand account of the war.

The word "dire" does not adequately describe the situation in Gaza's hospitals.

On a daily basis when I was working there, I had a list of at least 10 patients, and 60% of them were under the age of 15.

These were tiny children with life-threatening burns and limbs blown off, often losing significant family members in the attacks and left to cope with their life-changing injuries alone.

The streets were unrecognisable, just pile after pile of dust and rubble.

Such a scale of destruction could only be justified if every single building in Gaza was part of Hamas's infrastructure... Read more

'Israel will continue fighting with or without US help,' retired IDF colonel says

Israel will continue to fight Iran with or without US help, a retired Israel Defence Forces colonel says.

Miri Eisin told Breakfast presenter Wilfred Frost that the IDF had achieved air dominance over Tehran - repeating claims heard earlier this week.

"Since Friday, we have achieved air superiority," she said.

"We can send our resources in and we can target the Iranian Revolutionary Guard targets, the missile sites, the nuclear sites, the different sites that are military installations throughout all of Iran."

She added: "We'll continue to attack the nuclear sites, the missile sites, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and those installations as we've been doing, even if the Americans do not join in."

Trump does not want to go to war with Iran, former national security chief says

Donald Trump does not want to go to war with Iran and has left the door open for Tehran to resume negotiations, a former chief of staff of the US National Security Council has told Sky News.

Speaking on The World With Yalda Hakim, Fred Fleitz said the US president was "going to make Iran a pretty good deal for a peaceful nuclear programme".

But he said if Iran did not give up its enrichment programme then "the clock is running out" and Trump would send US bombers to drop bunker-buster bombs on its Fordow nuclear site.

"Trump is a man of his word," he said. "He gave the Iranians 60 days. And if they don't agree soon on this, Trump has concluded that an Iranian nuclear weapon will be here soon.

"And it is not just a threat to Israel. It is a threat to the United States. And that's why I think there's a good chance Trump will drop bunker-buster bombs on the Fordow facility."

He said Iran would have to agree to give up the site and agree to stop enriching uranium: "If it wants a peaceful nuclear programme, the US will help it build one."
