It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is taking an "extended hiatus" after 12 years as one of TV's most provocative sitcoms.

According to Kaitlin Olson, one of the show's stars, the gang have signed a contract with FX for two more seasons, but will return until 2019.

In an interview with TV Guide, Olson said the reason behind it was that most of the actors were busy with other projects.

"We ended up pushing our next season a year because we were all busy with separate projects this year," she said.

"So at the end of this coming shooting season of The Mick, I'll step right into Sunny after that."

Olson stars in The Mick as an aunt forced to take care of her three children.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is now the longest-running sitcom in TV history since The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which ended ended after 14 seasons in 1966.

It's Always Sunny was created by Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton - the two main stars - in 2005 and premiered its 12th season in January.
