Justin Bieber has apologised to fans after cancelling the rest of his world tour "due to unforeseen circumstances".

"Justin loves his fans and hates to disappoint them," Bieber's representatives wrote on his Facebook page on Monday.

"He thanks his fans for the incredible experience of the Purpose World Tour over last 18 months."

The Baby singer axed the last 15 shows of the tour after playing more than 150 concerts over the last year and a half.

"He is grateful and honoured to have shared that experience with his cast and crew for over 150 successful shows across 6 continents during this run," the statement reads.

"However, after careful consideration he has decided he will not be performing any further dates. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase."

His next scheduled show was meant to take place in Arlington, Texas, and fans have been left devastated by the news.

"Define heartbreak," one fan wrote on Twitter.

"It's not just a cancelled tour, it's a cancelled dream," wrote another.

"You all act surprised Bieber has cancelled his tour. He's done this before? He's one of the most unreliable pop stars of this generation," wrote an angry fan.

But it seems it wasn't too late to say sorry, as most reactions on social media have tended favourably toward the singer.

"A man's soul and well being came first and we must respect and honour that," wrote one fan.

According to website TMZ, Bieber himself had a few words for his fans, saying he is "truly sorry", and that he is "looking forward to just resting, getting some relaxation and we're going to ride some bikes".

This comes after Bieber was banned from playing in China due to his "series of misbehaviours while living abroad and during his performances", which the country's authorities feel have "caused public resentment".
