California judge orders hearing request to limit military in LA

A federal judge in California has scheduled a hearing for Thursday on the state's request for an emergency order to stop Donald Trump from using the military for immigration enforcement actions in Los Angeles, our partner network reports.

We reported earlier that California governor Gavin Newsom had filed an emergency motion blocking National Guard troops and the marines from assisting with immigration raids (see post at 8.25pm).

Now, US district judge Charles Breyer has granted the Trump administration's request for more time to respond.

The Trump administration has been given until until tomorrow to file a response, with a hearing set for Thursday.

White House: Newsom continues to fail his state

Our partner network has reached out to the White House for a response to California governor Gavin Newsom claiming Donald Trump didn't call him yesterday.

White House communications director Steven Cheung issued this statement...

"The president called Gavin Newsom to tell him to get his ass in gear. The governor has clearly decided to disgustingly side with the violent rioters instead of protecting Californians.

"The only liar here is Newsom who continues to fail his state as he prioritises doing interviews with leftist media to gaslight the public instead of helping his state."

How did this start?

In the Oval Office today, Trump was asked when he last spoke to Newsom.

"A day ago," the president replied.

"Called him up to tell him, got to do a better job. He's doing a bad job. Causing a lot of death and a lot of potential death. If we didn't send out the National Guard, Los Angeles would be burning right now."

In response to Trump's comments in the Oval Office, Newsom's office said: "Trump and Newsom did not speak since Friday."

A Newsom aide added that a review of the governor's phone did not show a missed call or voicemail from the president since then.

'Anarchy will not stand' in LA, Trump says

Addressing the situation in Los Angeles, Donald Trump says he has deployed thousands of National Guard troops to protect federal law enforcement from the attacks of a "vicious and violent mob".

He says: "What you are witnessing in California is a full blown assault on peace, public order and national sovereignty carried out by rioters carrying foreign flags with the aim of continuing a foreign invasion of our country."

Trump says "open border policy" is the "dumbest policy yet".

The president goes on to say the rioters don't carry the American flag - they only burn it.

"People that burn the American flag should go to jail for one year," he says.

He adds: "Under the Trump administration this anarchy will not stand."

We reported earlier on Trump calling for those burning the US flag to be sent to jail (see post at 8.17pm).

'We will be restoring the names of military forts'

The US president says he will be restoring the names of military forts in the US.

The forts are: Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort AP Hill and Fort Robert E Lee.

"We won a lot of battles out of those forts and this is no time to change. And I'm superstitious. We want to keep it going," he says.

"So that's a big story that we just announced."

Trump: We have the greatest force than anywhere on earth

Donald Trump has arrived on stage in Fort Bragg and is met with cheers and applause from those in the crowd.

The US president says "Saturday is going to be a big day in Washington DC".

"Recently other countries celebrated the victory of World War I," he says.

"The only ones that weren't celebrating was the USA and we're the ones that won the war. Without us you'd all be speaking German right now."

He says for the country's adversaries "there is no greater fear that the US army".

"We have the greatest force than anywhere on earth," he adds.

He says as president he wants to thank those who have served in the army.

Hegseth: Trump has your back

US defence secretary Pete Hegseth has arrived on stage and is addressing the crowds in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for the 250th anniversary of the US army.

Speaking on Donald Trump, he says the message from US leader is "he has your back".

"At the defence department we are doing three things. We are restoring the warrior ethos," he says.

"We're getting back to basics - standards, accountability, readiness, training, war fighting and lethality.

"We're not a college or a university. We're not interested in your woke garbage and your political correctness."

He goes on to say Trump "seeks peace" but those who want peace "must prepare for war".

LAPD release latest arrest figures

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have released the latest figures relating to the protests in the city.

They said on Monday evening there were 96 arrests for failure to disperse in the downtown LA area.

Two LAPD officers were also injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Several businesses were also looted and 14 arrests were made for looting, the police said.

On Saturday, the LAPD arrested 29 people for failure to disperse.

And on Sunday, the LAPD made 21 arrests - the charges range from attempted murder with a molotov cocktail, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, looting and failure to disperse.

Trump to speak in North Carolina

Donald Trump will be speaking from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, shortly.

He's due to speak at 9pm UK time. We'll bring you the latest as we get it.

Newsom files emergency motion blocking militarisation of LA

California governor Gavin Newsom has filed an emergency motion blocking National Guard troops and the marines from assisting with immigration raids.

In an statement on X, the governor said the following...

Today, hundreds of US marines arrived in the Los Angeles area under orders from Donald Trump, who has also activated 4,000 National Guard troops to quell protests in the city.

It came despite objections from Newsom that the deployments are politically motivated.

The city has seen days of public protests since the Trump administration launched a series of immigration raids on Friday.

State officials said Trump's response was an extreme overreaction to mostly peaceful demonstrations.
