A young mother who was allowed to slip through Donald Trump's zero-tolerance border crackdown has described the traumatic scenes inside controversial detention centres.

The 21-year-old from Honduras crossed into the US from Mexico on Thursday but was released by authorities in Texas pending on immigration court date.

Unlike hundreds of families who have been separated at the border, Ani Gabriella was able to keep her two-month-old daughter with her. It appears she was deemed too young to be taken away.

At a humanitarian respite centre in McAllen, she told Sky News of her days in detention.

She said: "I feel sad because there are lots of mothers inside crying for their babies.

"I did not sleep for five days because I was afraid they would take my baby away."

She said she had left Honduras while eight-and-a-half months pregnant but had expected to give birth in the US.

She has been fitted with an electronic tag to track her movements ahead of her date at the immigration court. She could still face deporatation.

She was one of 50 people released by customs and border protection at a bus station in McAllen. Many were given bus tickets to destinations across America.

As if it illustrate the national profile of this story the lawyer representing Stormy Daniels, the adult movie star suing Donald Trump over an alleged affair, has arrived to represent 50 detained women.

Michael Avenatti told Sky News: "From my perspective this policy needs to be changed immediately. We need to stop separating parents from their children, non-violent parents who are simply coming to America to make a better life for them and their families.

"You can have a debate about what level of integration we should have in this country but there should be no debate about whether children should never be separated from their parents - there is no excuse for this."
