We're wrapping up our coverage

We're finishing our coverage of Wednesday's mass shooting in Maine for now but follow other coverage here.

Robert Card, the 40-year-old army reservist at the centre of the shooting, was found dead on Friday night after two days of fear and terror in the bustling city of Lewiston.

The community there was left devastated as 18 people - including a 14-year-old boy - were killed in the rampage at a bowling alley and a bar a short distance away.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Thanks for following along.

More details emerge about the victims

The names and pictures of the 15 men, two women and one child who were killed were released on Friday.

Seven people died at the Just-in-Time bowling alley, eight were killed at Schemengees Bar and Grille, and three died at hospitals, according to police.

A number of parents and children were at the bowling alley for a children's bowling league - including the youngest victim 14-year-old Aaron Young. His father Bill Young was also killed in the attack.

The eldest was 76-years-old Bob Violette - a retiree who was coaching the youth bowling league and was described as devoted, approachable and kind.

The Maine Educational Centre for the Deaf said the shootings killed at least four members of their community.

Other victims include father-of four Joshua Seal, who was described by his wife as the "world's best father", and part-time bowling alley worker Tricia Asselin.

Local councillor Leroy Walker told news outlets that his son, Joe, a manager at the bar, died going after the shooter with a butcher's knife.

Another victim Peyton Brewer-Ross was a dedicated pipefitter whose death leaves a gaping void in the lives of his partner, young daughter and friends, members of his union said.

Thirteen people were also wounded.

Photos of the victims were posted on a board behind Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck at a press conference on Friday as he read the names. A moment of silence followed.

The city held an online vigil on Friday night with local clergy members, prayers and music.

Locals expressed their shock and pain in chat postings, describing themselves as angry, grieving, tired and heartbroken. Those watching at home were urged to light candles.

The attack was the worst mass killing in Maine's history.

Who was Robert Card?

Police identified the suspect at the centre of the deadly shooting as 40-year-old Robert Card from the small town of Bowdoin around 14 miles east of Lewiston.

He was an Army reservist who had undergone a mental health evaluation after military officials became concerned that he was acting erratically in mid-July, officials said.

The New York Army National Guard said the Army Reserve's 3rd Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment, became concerned about Card's behaviour while the unit was training at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York earlier this summer.

Shortly after the attack, a bulletin sent to police across the US said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks after "hearing voices and threats to shoot up" a military base.

Card's relatives also told investigators that he recently discussed hearing voices and became more focused on the bowling alley and bar, officials said.

We previously reported that The Associated Press said his body was found at a recycling centre where he had recently worked (see 7.32am post).

Two law enforcement officials said they had found a suicide note addressed to his son at a home associated with Card - but said it did not provide any specific motive for the shooting.

Card's phone was also found in the home while a gun was found in the white Subaru that Card abandoned.

The Card family has lived in Bowdoin for generations, neighbours said, and various members of the family own hundreds of acres of land in the area.

The Cards also owned the local sawmill and years ago donated the land for a local church.

Card's body found at a recycling centre where he had recently worked - reports

We reported earlier that it remains unclear when Robert Card died (see 3.33am post).

But The Associated Press is reporting that a US official said the body was found at a recycling centre where Card had recently worked.

Leo Madden, who said he ran Maine Recycling Corporation for decades, told the AP that Card worked there for a couple years and nothing about him stood out.

Mr Madden said he didn鈥檛 remember when Card was employed or whether he was fired or quit.

How did Maine shooter Robert Card evade police?

Most suspects in mass shootings are found alive or dead within minutes of police arriving.

But Robert Card moved so fast that officers apparently didn't even get a glimpse of him before he fled.

Here is the timeline of Wednesday's shooting:

6.56pm - The first 911 emergency calls were made from the Just-in-Time Recreation bowling alley on Wednesday where Card first started shooting.

6.58pm - Four plain-clothed police officers who happened to be at a nearby shooting range heard the radio call and arrived at the bowling alley about 90 seconds later. But Card had already fled in his Subaru.

7.01pm - The first uniformed officer arrives at the bowling alongside eight more officers a minute later.

7.08pm - Dispatchers started to receive calls about a shooter at Schemengees Bar and Grille four miles away.

7.13pm - Lewiston police arrive at the bar but Card was nowhere to be found. State police officers who were on their way to respond to the first shooting scene and were diverted also arrived at the scene at this time.

Friday - Card's body was discovered with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Lisbon Falls, not far from the scene of the shootings.

Police also received a third call reporting a possible shooter in a Walmart but it turned out to be a false alarm.

"By the time they responded to one location, they had calls coming in for a second location then a third location. I'm sure it was overwhelming and there was confusion," Craig Caine, a retired inspector with the US Marshal's Service said.

"That could have been one reason why... nobody got eyes on him."

Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck released the details of the response timeline during a news conference on Friday.

Families have 'no real closure' after suspects death

Some family members of the victims of the mass shooting have been reacting to the death of suspect Robert Card.

Alicia Lachance, whose daughter, Tricia Asselin, worked part-time at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley, one of two shooting locations, said she had "no mercy" for Card, NBC reported.

She said there remain questions about circumstances that led up to the incident, which need to be answered.

Leroy Walker's son, Joseph 'Joey' Walker, was a manager at Schemengees Bar and Grille where he was killed.

He said Card's death has given him "no real closure".

"I sure was hoping they would find him alive," Mr Walker said.

Ralph Brewer, whose brother, Peyton Brewer-Ross, was killed at Schemengees, said Maine can now begin its healing process.

He added that he is "thankful for the tireless effort by local, state and federal law enforcement to bring this chapter to a close," according to NBC.

President Biden vows to do everything to end 'gun violence epidemic'

President Joe Biden has released a statement following the news that suspected gunman Robert Card has been found dead.

He began by writing the incident has been a "tragic two days - not just for Lewiston, Maine, but for our entire country".

The president used the statement to comment on America's gun laws, writing: "Once again, an American community and American families have been devastated by gun violence.

"In all, at least eighteen souls brutally slain, more injured, some critically, and scores of family and friends praying and experiencing trauma no one ever wants to imagine."

The US leader added that Americans should not have to live like this, calling on Republicans in Congress to "fulfill their obligation to keep the American people safe".

"Until that day comes, I will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic. The Lewiston community 鈥 and all Americans 鈥 deserve nothing less," he wrote.

'No words can diminish shock and pain' of victims families

The US Senator for Maine has addressed the families of the 18 victims of the mass shooting.

"To the families who lost loved ones and to those injured by this attack, I know that no words can diminish the shock, pain, and justifiable anger you feel," Susan Collins said in a statement.

"It is my hope that you will find solace and strength in knowing that you are in the hearts of people throughout Maine and across the nation."

Echoing the thoughts of her colleagues, she said that the state can breathe a "collective sigh of relief" after the death of the suspected gunman, Robert Card.

"When President Joe Biden called me this evening to tell me the perpetrator of the heinous attacks in Lewiston had been found, we both expressed our profound appreciation for the courage and determination of these brave men and women," Susan Collins said in a statement.

Ms Collins went on to thank police and emergency service workers who "worked tirelessly" and the people of Maine who "came together in the wake of this attack".

Public safety commissioner: Unclear when suspect died

Public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck is now speaking at the news conference.

He said that Card was found dead at 7.45pm local time near the Androscoggin River in the Lisbon Falls area, which police were pictured searching on Friday.

It remains unclear exactly when the suspect died.

Mr Sauschuck added that Card's family was notified of his death before the news conference took place.

He confirmed that Card's death is believed to have occurred due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Governor of Maine 'breathing sigh of relief'

Addressing the news conference, governor of Maine, Janet Mills, said she is "breathing a sigh of relief" to know the suspect is "not a threat" to anyone.

She said law enforcement will continue to investigate "all the facts" in order to bring some closure to the families of the victims.

Ms Mills said that Card was found dead in the town of Lisbon, which is around a 15-20 minute drive from the town of Lewiston, where the shooting took place.
