A British woman has been found dead and a British man is missing after they were apparently swept away in a flash flood while hiking in Majorca.

They were on a trail that leads through a small canyon to the sea when the storm hit the Balearic island on Tuesday, Spain's Civil Guard said.

The police initially said they had found the body of a man and were searching for the woman, but on Wednesday corrected it to say the body was of a woman.

Emergency services have been searching near a canyon called the Torrent de Pareis in the Tramuntana mountain range.

The Balearic Islands and a large area of Spain's eastern coast were under alert for strong winds and heavy rains.

The region has been experiencing extremely wet weather in recent weeks.

Firefighters said on X in mid-August they had cordoned off areas in Majorca's capital Palma and evacuated 29 people from a train on the line between the city and Manacor due to the flooding.
