A man has admitted stabbing a police officer 10 times while he was at home with his wife and two children.

John McCartney, 40, began his attack when the victim answered his door in Rayleigh, Essex, on 24 April last year.

The officer, who cannot be named, suffering six stab wounds to the centre of his chest, lacerations to his chest, arm and abdomen - exposing his bowel - a half-inch wound to the upper arm and wounds to the feet.

Essex Police said he was recovering at home, and that his bravery had "protected the community".

McCartney admitted attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, appearing via video link.

He is believed to have known the officer, a previous hearing was told, and he is being held at a secure psychiatric facility.

At Monday's hearing, McCartney spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, give his nationality as British and enter his guilty pleas.

Sentencing was delayed until March to allow time for psychologists to give evidence about his mental state.

Chief Constable Ben Harrington paid tribute to the wounded officer, commenting: "I'm in no doubt that his heroism in tackling an armed man whilst critically injured protected the community, protected his family, and Essex is safer as a result.

"I say thank you to the emergency services, to his neighbours, to the community and the doctors, medics and paramedics who undoubtedly saved his life."

Mr Harrington said he hoped a "man of his bravery" would be able to continue with the force.

The officer received an "outstanding act" award from Essex Police in October.
