A taxi driver has been arrested on live television after confessing to the murder of his girlfriend in an interview.

Marinder Singh told Indian channel News18 that he strangled and cut the throat of his 27-year-old girlfriend Sarabjit Kaur on New Year's Eve because he thought she was having an affair.

He said he had gone to the channel's offices in Chandigarh to "surrender".

Singh said the victim's family had rejected his marriage proposal following months of negotiation.

"Marriage talks between my family and Sarabjit's family had been going on for six months but her family would always create problems, sometimes saying I am not from their caste and sometimes rejecting me for not having a government job," he said.

Singh, who was reportedly convicted of killing another woman in 2010, was later arrested during his appearance on the channel on Tuesday.

Police were filmed entering the studio before escorting the 31-year-old from the building and putting him in a van.

Ms Kaur, who was a nurse, was seen checking into a hotel in Chandigarh with Singh on 30 December.

Two days later - after Singh had checked out - staff went up to the room to find her body on the bloodstained bed.
