Man arrested on suspicion of breaking into Windsor Castle grounds

Thames Valley Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of trespass on a protected site and possession of Class-A drugs.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of breaking into the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The man was spotted by Metropolitan Police officers after 1pm on Sunday and "quickly challenged".

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of trespass and for possession of Class-A drugs.

The man was then passed into the custody of Thames Valley Police.

The police said he has since been bailed, and an investigation is ongoing.

Sky News understands no members of the Royal Family were in the castle at the time.

The police added that the man had not entered the inner grounds of the castle.

It is a criminal offence to trespass on a protected site designated under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005.

In October last year, another security scare took place on the Windsor Castle estate when masked burglars broke in while members of the Royal Family were believed to have been asleep nearby, the Sun reported.

Two men reportedly scaled a 6ft fence, and then used a stolen truck to break through a security gate - after fleeing on quad bikes.

The King and Queen were not in residence at the time.
