A man has been charged with attempted murder after a mother and her three-week-old baby were stabbed.

The baby boy remains critically ill in hospital after emergency services were called to an address in Portland Close, Wallsend, North Tyneside, at 2.15pm on Wednesday.

An Air Ambulance was seen landing in nearby Tiverton Close.

The baby's 21-year-old mother was also taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Her condition is now serious but stable and she is talking in hospital, Northumbria Police said.

Denis Erdinch Beytula, 27, of Portland Close, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Cole said: "I want to reiterate that this does not appear to be a random attack and that those involved are all known to each other - there is no wider risk to the public.
