A man has been charged with killing two doctors inside the penthouse of a luxury condominium building in south Boston.
Bampumim Teixeira is scheduled to appear in court on Monday charged with killing Dr Lina Bolanos and Dr Richard Field at the Macallen Building on Friday night.
Officers found the bodies after responding to reports of a man with a gun.
Police have not given a motive for the killings, but said the suspect most likely knew the victims, who were engaged.
Commissioner William Evans said Teixeira opened fire when officers confronted him at the door. Officers returned fire, hitting Teixeira multiple times.
He was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.
Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said Teixeira will be arraigned from his hospital bed.
Dr Bolanos, 38, was a paediatric anaesthesiologist at Massachusetts Eye and Ear hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School.
Dr Field, 49, was also an anaesthesiologist and worked at North Shore Pain Management.
Police have not said how they were killed.
Dr Sunil Eappen, chief medical officer and chief of anaesthesia at Massachusetts Eye and Ear hospital, said in a statement: "It is desperately hard for all of us to fathom that our friend who never failed to brighten our days is no longer with us."
On its website, North Shore Pain Management said Dr Field was "instrumental in the creation of this practice".
It added: "He was a valued member of the medical community and a tremendous advocate for his patients.
"His tragic and sudden passing leaves an inescapable void in all of us."
