An Irish man and a woman are in a serious condition after four people were shot at a Marbella nightclub.

One person - believed to be the gunman - was stabbed and has been arrested, according to local police. They said the suspect is in a serious condition with chest and head injuries.

The condition of the other two people shot is unclear.

Officers did not say what caused the violence at the Opium beach club, but sources told Spanish news site El Confidencial it took place following a fight just after 1am on Monday.

Video published online appears to show a man brandishing a large spirits bottle - seconds later several bangs are heard and clubbers at the crowded open-air venue run in panic.

The names of the those involved have not yet been released.

Opium describes itself as hosting "legendary day-parties by the sea... to the spectacular concerts that enlighten starry nights".

Marbella, on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, is popular with wealthy Britons and is known for its upmarket bars, clubs and shops.
