It comes ahead of the release of LucasFilm's Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker in December, the last film in the nine-part Skywalker saga which began with the original Star Wars in 1977.

Producer Fiege, who is president of Marvel Studios, will work on the project alongside LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy, according to Disney, which owns both companies.

Alan Horn, co-chairman and chief creative officer of The Walt Disney Studios, said: "With the close of the Skywalker saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together."

Fiege is one of the most successful producers in Hollywood history and has been president of Marvel Studios since 2007, overseeing its multibillion-dollar superhero films.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes characters such as Iron Man, Captain America and Black Panther, is the biggest franchise in film history, followed by Star Wars.
