"We were there for each other in the early days of our career and he was to me, as funny as he was on Friends and he was and other things too, in person he was just the funniest man ever."

Speaking of his drug and alcohol abuse, he added: "I really loved him. A lot of us who were close to him felt like we lost him to drugs and alcohol a long time ago because as he documented in his autobiography there was so much suffering.

"I had to pick it up and put down the biography like 11 times it was so painful for me to read."

Creators of Friends 'shocked and deeply saddened'

The co-creators of Friends, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, have released a joint statement, along with the series' executive producer Kevin Bright.

"All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.

"He was a brilliant talent. It鈥檚 a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew鈥檚 case, there are no truer words.

"From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.

"We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment - not just to his work, but in life as well.

"He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.

"We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken."

Perry was a regular sight inside the arena, including when the Kings won their first Stanley Cup in 45 years in 2012.

The actor spoke about his love of the team (and in particular star scorer Anze Kopitar) in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel in 2015.

"I'm friends with Anze Kopitar," he told the talkshow host.

"I text him from time to time and I tried desperately to become friends with him."

Perry remembered Kopitar asking him if he wanted to lift the Stanley Cup over his head.

"I was like oh my God, yes please."

And then immediately Kopitar asked him if he would come to Slovenia for his wedding.

"The wedding was interesting", he quipped. "The wedding lasted about 14 hours and so I was surrounded by drunken Slovenians for 14 hours, very few of which spoke English."

Perry said his substance struggles started with drinking as a teenager, before moving on to vodka and painkilling drugs Vicodin and OxyContin, and tranquilliser Xanax.

In his book, he described Jennifer Aniston confronting him over his drinking in his trailer, and being treated in an alcohol addiction centre while he was filming his wedding to Monica, and leaving the studio with his "sober technician" to check back into the facility.

As well as sponsoring three Alcohol Anonymous members, Perry dedicated his book "to all the sufferers out there", adding, "you know who you are".
