Mauricio Pochettino 'interested' in Manchester United job after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked as manager

Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday following a 4-1 defeat to Watford. Pochettino led Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2019 before being sacked later that year. He is currently at the helm at Paris Saint-Germain - with his contract set to expire in 2023.

And Pochettino is understood to be "interested" in the position - although his immediate focus is said to be on PSG's upcoming Champions League fixture against Manchester City.

United sacked Solskjaer on Sunday, following a 4-1 loss to Watford and a string of poor results.

Former player Michael Carrick is taking charge of the squad until an interim coach is appointed.

Pochettino currently has just over a year left on his contract at PSG, having taken the reins in January.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said: "I think Mauricio Pochettino - although he'd never say it - would leave to come to Man Utd on a five-year deal tomorrow.

"He'd look at that group of players, he'd look at the club and he'd realise he'd probably be able to achieve more than he wants at Man Utd in terms of a project.

"At PSG you are on season by season, 'you've got to win the Champions League or you're out'- type of model. I don't think that suits Pochettino. I think he would absolutely come to Man Utd on a five-year deal, with backing behind him."

Solskjaer 'rebuilt soul' of Man Utd

Another target for United is Ajax manager Erik ten Hag - although he signed a new contract with the Amsterdam team earlier this year.

Despite this, Sky Sports News has been told Ten Hag would be "100% interested" in taking over in Manchester.

Neville says United are right to be cautious about who they hire - with some fans frustrated the club waited to sack Solskjaer and missed out on Antonio Conte.

Conte - who won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017 - was recently appointed manager at Spurs.

Former United captain Neville said: "There's been no one available in the last three or four weeks when this has come to a head that you could have given a three-and-a-half-year contract to.

"I've got no doubt about Antonio Conte's quality as a manager, but this club wouldn't appoint him. Man City wouldn't appoint him.

"They wouldn't appoint Jose Mourinho.

"Man Utd have had that experience of appointing what would be a 'hit job' manager and they're not going to do it - he was never going to be appointed.

"They have to make sure they get the next one right, if that means being patient for six months to wait for managers to become available at the end of the season."
