The Duchess of Sussex has been crowned the UK's top social climber by Tatler magazine.

The high society publication said Meghan had reached the "pinnacle of the greasy pole", describing her as a "tungsten toughie" who would "drag the royal family into the 21st century".

She beat Commons Speaker John Bercow and model Jerry Hall to top Tatler's list, which said Meghan had made an "A-list ascent".

Some have made comparisons to the 1990s, seen by many royal commentators as the most difficult time for the Windsors

However, it is not quite a "rags-to-riches tale", the publication said, pointing out that Meghan was "privately educated and her father won an Emmy for lighting direction".

Nevertheless, it described her as a "Ralph & Russo-clad beacon of change (who) has found a role that suits her to perfection".

Former Suits actress Meghan, who was raised in Los Angeles, married Prince Harry last year and gave birth to their son Archie in May.

Commenting on Mr Bercow, Tatler said he was "notoriously fond of taxis, perhaps because his dad drove one", adding: "Now so great (if not so good), some wonder if he'll ever relinquish his Commons Speakership."

Despite topping Tatler's list, the Duchess of Sussex has endured a summer of difficult headlines over flights on private jets - something Sir Elton John took exception to.
