Melania Trump has defended the rights of teenagers who booed her during a speech in Baltimore - a place her husband called "rat and rodent infested".

The first lady was in the city for a youth summit and took to the stage to urge students to avoid drugs.

However, she was met by a mix of boos and cheers, and the audience was noisy throughout her five-minute address.

Soon after arriving back at the White House, Mrs Trump released a statement defending the importance of freedom of speech and reaffirming her commitment to warning about drugs.

"We live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fact is we have a serious crisis in our country and I remain committed to educating children on the dangers and deadly consequences of drug abuse," she said.

Mrs Trump was in Maryland for the Baltimore Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness and was appearing on behalf of her Be Best youth campaign.

In July, President Trump called an area of the city represented by black politician Elijah Cummings a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess" and said no one would want to live there.

Political opponents such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said his comments were racist.

There were protests when the president visited Baltimore two months later, including a giant inflatable rat.
