Another cricketer has corroborated an accusation of racism against former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Adil Rashid backed the allegation by their former Yorkshire team-mate Azeem Rafiq.

Mr Rafiq made allegations of institutional racism against Yorkshire, whom Mr Vaughan formerly captained.

He claimed Mr Vaughan said to a group of the team's Asian plans that there were "too many of you lot, we need to do something about it" before a match in 2009.

Mr Vaughan has categorically denied the allegation.

He has been stood down from his BBC 5 Live show.

Mr Rashid, who still plays for Yorkshire, told The Cricketer: "I wanted to concentrate as much as possible on my cricket and to avoid distractions to the detriment of the team but I can confirm Azeem Rafiq's recollection of Michael Vaughan's comments to a group of us Asian players."

Mr Rashid, who described racism as "a cancer", said he would be "happy to support" any further official investigations into Mr Rafiq's claims.

Mr Rashid is the second of Mr Rafiq's team-mates to support his allegation.

Pakistan bowler Rana Naved ul-Hasan also said he heard Mr Vaughan's comment.

A fourth player in the group, Ajmal Shahzad, previously told the Daily Mail he had no recollection of the event. He said "the senior guys were really good to me".

A Yorkshire-commissioned independent report found Mr Rafiq was the victim of "racial harassment and bullying" during his time at the country, between 2008 and 2014 and between 2016 and 2018.

The club accepted the findings but announced no disciplinary action.

It has been widely criticised for its response, with the ECB suspending their right to host international and major matches at Headingley. Several major sponsors also cut ties with the club.
