Dame Olivia Newton-John's husband has paid tribute to the Grease star following her death on Monday.

The singer and actor, who played Sandy Olsson in the hit 1978 film, died peacefully surrounded by her friends and family at her ranch in southern California, at the age of 73.

Her husband announced the news, leading to a flurry of tributes from stars, including Grease co-star John Travolta and Sir Elton John.

John Easterling has now paid his own tribute to his late wife, who he married in 2008.

Sharing a picture on Instagram, he described her as a "healer", "the most courageous woman" and "genuinely caring".

"Our love for each other transcends our understanding. Every day we expressed our gratitude for this love that could be so deep, so real, so natural," he wrote.

"We never had to 'work' on it. We were in awe of this great mystery and accepted the experience of our love as past, present and forever.

"At Olivia's deepest essence she was a healer using her mediums of song, of words, of touch. She was the most courageous woman I've ever known.

"Her bandwidth for genuinely caring for people, for nature and all creatures almost eclipses what is humanely possible."

Tottie Goldsmith, Dame Olivia's niece reacted to the post, writing that the couple were "true soulmates".

Dame Olivia was born in Cambridge in 1948, before moving to Australia at the age of five.

She played the shy, quiet Sandy in the 1978 film adaptation of the musical Grease, starring alongside John Travolta, who was Danny Zuko, leader of the T-Birds.

Prior to her starring role in the film, she represented the UK at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing fourth, in the year Abba won with Waterloo.

She is a four-time Grammy Award winner, who featured in five number one hits on America's Billboard Hot 100, and sold over a 100 millions records.
