A 19-year-old man has died and nine people have been left injured after a suspected knife attack in the city of Villeurbanne near Lyon, French police have said.
The incident took place at about 4.30pm local time with media reports claiming it happened at the Laurent-Bonnevay metro station in the east of the city.
The suspected attacker is said to have assaulted people while they were waiting at a bus stop before running to the metro station.
A video on social media showed a man with a large knife being overpowered by staff at the station.
As a result of the attack, the city's Metro A train network was shut down.
It is also reported that about 50 firefighters attended the incident.
The area has been cordoned off while an investigation takes place.
Police have arrested a man over the knife attack.
A second suspected attacker is currently being hunted by French authorities and is thought to be carrying a metal spike used to roast meat.
Police are also looking for possible accomplices.
The national anti-terror office has not yet been asked to take part in the investigation, nor have national security forces.
Officials said the motive for the attack remained unknown.
Police Nationale 69, the local force, said in a statement on Twitter: "An event is underway at #Villeurbanne following a stabbing attack requiring rescue. Do not disturb the rescue. Do not spread false information."
